Doctor specialized in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry
Languages: Spanish and English
Doctor Itziar Baltasar Tello is licensed in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Extremadura and undertook her Psychiatry specialty at the Infanta Cristina Hospital in Badajoz. During her residency in Psychiatry, she dedicated a large part of her studies to childhood and youth mental pathology, including various stays in foreign countries to acquire experience in the field- in both Hospital Niño Jesús in Madrid and at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center in Pennsylvania, USA. During her residency she completed a three-year Master in Analytical Group Psychotherapy in which she received training in interpersonal dynamics. Additionally, she participated in a program of drug prevention in public high schools of the Community of Extremadura.
Doctor Baltasar was awarded one of the prestigious Grants for Advanced Studies by the Alicia Koplowitz foundation to carry out her fellowship in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center in Pittsburgh for two years. During this period, she had the opportunity to work in units specialized in Autism, Eating Disorders, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and Psychosis with children and adolescents concentrating fundamentally on early onset mood disorders. In this two-year stay she earned not only highly specialized professional experience but also learned American language and culture and had firsthand experience of being an expatriate and the challenges that implies.
Currently she combines her clinical activity at Sinews with her work at the Hospital General Universitario Gregorio Marañón, where she works with inpatient and outpatient adolescents with severe psychopathology on the Autism spectrum. Although the specialty of Child Psychiatry does not exist in Spain yet, Itziar has always worked exclusively with children and adolescents and is a true expert in this field. When speaking about her profession, her passion is clear- “the session is much more fun, children have a great capacity to get better, everything is more spontaneous, and it flows naturally”.
Right now Itziar is continuing to develop her PhD in Affective Disorders in Adolescents in the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid.
